Woman chooses not to pay fine and is detained by PSP for theft in pharmacy

A 39-year-old woman was arrested by the Public Security Police (PSP) last Thursday in Marinha Grande, as there was an active arrest warrant issued against her by the Judicial Court of the District of Leiria – Local Criminal Court of Leiria, “for the payment of a fine or serving a prison sentence for the crime of theft.”

In May 2022, at a pharmacy in the city of Leiria, the detainee took several cosmetic products. She removed the products from their packaging and placed them in a bag she was carrying, causing a financial loss of 176 euros, according to a PSP statement sent to newsrooms.

The statement further reveals that “following a court decision finalized on November 28, 2024, the detainee was sentenced to serve 133 days of subsidiary imprisonment or, alternatively, to pay a fine of 1,100 euros.”

Since the woman did not choose to pay the fine, she was “taken to the Tires Prison to serve the aforementioned sentence.”
