Woman detained after throwing paper with urine at police officers in Lisbon

A 42-year-old woman was arrested in the early hours of Thursday on charges of threatening and insulting police officers after allegedly throwing wet paper, suspected to be soaked with urine, and making threats against two officers in Lisbon.

The Public Security Police (PSP) reported that the incident took place at around 12:45 AM at the arrivals area of Humberto Delgado Airport, during an operation by the Airport Security and Border Control Division to check on passengers staying overnight in the terminal.

“During the operation, when approached by officers, the suspect threw a wet plastic bag containing paper remnants towards them, hitting one officer on the head and leg,” the PSP statement said.

The exact content of the wet paper could not be determined, but police suspect it was “contaminated with urine or another bodily fluid” due to the “nauseating odor detected at the scene.”

The suspect, who displayed “disruptive and offensive behavior,” was escorted out of the terminal to “restore public order and ensure the smooth functioning of the facility.”

However, while being escorted “to the exit area,” the suspect “uttered several threatening and insulting remarks directed at the officers.”

At the police station, the woman continued her offensive behavior and threats. “On multiple occasions, she spat on the floor and walls, displaying a disrespectful attitude,” the police revealed.

The woman was formally charged and released under the conditions of identity and residence. Her trial has been postponed to a later date.

In Portugal, penalties for threats and public insults vary according to severity, ranging from fines to prison sentences.
