
The Maritime Authority reported receiving an alert about an incident at 16:39 local time (17:39 in Lisbon) through the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center of Ponta Delgada (MRCC Delgada).
Immediately, the crew members from Ponta Delgada’s Life-Saving Station, along with officers from the Local Command of the Maritime Police and volunteers from the Ribeira Grande and Ponta Delgada Fire Departments, were mobilized.
“Upon arrival at the scene, it was found that the victim, who was lying face down in the water, had been promptly retrieved by the Ribeira Grande Volunteer Firefighters,” the Maritime Authority noted.
The crew from the Life-Saving Station then transported the woman to Ponta Delgada port, where she was declared deceased.
Following contact with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Ponta Delgada Volunteer Firefighters transported the victim’s body to the Hospital Divino Espírito Santo for an autopsy.
The Maritime Police Psychology Office is providing support to the victim’s family.
