A 41-year-old woman was identified by authorities on the night of April 25 for allegedly faking the theft of her mobile phone in order to activate the device’s insurance policy in the Lisbon neighborhood of Marvila.

Initially, the suspect presented herself at the Marvila Police Station claiming to have been a victim of robbery, detailed the Public Security Police (PSP) in a statement released to the press on Wednesday.

Upon returning to provide additional information about the allegedly stolen device, police noted “a series of indications pointing to a simulated scenario, rife with factual inconsistencies.”

“Faced with the incoherent narrative provided and the collected evidence, the woman eventually admitted her story was falsified, […] her intention being to file the robbery report for the purpose of activating the respective insurance,” the statement reads.

The woman has been named a formal suspect and is subject to terms of identity and residence, pending a court decision.

This operation was conducted by the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP, specifically through its 2nd Police Division.
