The Mayor of Oeiras announced that a woman was swept away by water in Tercena and was transported to São Francisco Xavier Hospital in Lisbon for observation.
The incident occurred on Avenida Infante D. Henrique, near the viaduct separating Tercena (Oeiras) and Massamá (Sintra), an area known for flooding due to significant water accumulation.
Isaltino Morais mentioned the municipality is aware of the issues and is preparing a project to mitigate flooding effects.
“We are talking about an investment of eight million euros. We should set up the site this week. The project will last one year,” he stated.
The mayor pointed out that the problems in Tercena are caused by water from Massamá, which cannot be contained by the conduit leading to the Barcarena stream.
Morais argued that the project should also be co-financed by the neighboring municipality of Sintra.
“Neither the State nor the municipality of Sintra is involved. It’s solely the municipality of Oeiras, through SIMAS, making this investment,” he remarked.
Aside from the Tercena roundabout, rain also impacted the International School facilities in Oeiras.
The districts of Lisbon, Setúbal, and Santarém are under an orange weather warning from 3:41 PM to 9:00 PM due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
Initially, these districts were under a yellow warning, the least severe, but IPMA upgraded this to orange, as stated in a communiqué issued at 4:18 PM.
On Wednesday, Setúbal, Évora, Beja, and Faro will be under an orange warning from 3:00 AM to 3:00 PM due to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and wind, according to IPMA.
Furthermore, IPMA has placed all 18 districts of mainland Portugal under a yellow warning between today and Wednesday at various times due to adverse weather conditions.
The orange warning is issued by IPMA when there is a “moderate to high-risk weather situation,” while yellow indicates risk for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.
The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) recorded 138 incidents in the Lisbon region by 4:00 PM today due to bad weather, most being floods and fallen trees. This does not include data from the capital.
Lisbon reported 66 incidents between 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM today, mainly floods from rainfall, leading to traffic closure in the Campo Pequeno tunnel.
ANEPC warned of potential urban flooding and flash floods in the coming days due to forecasts of heavy rain and strong winds, urging the public to take preventive measures.
