A 38-year-old woman was fatally stabbed on Thursday morning, November 6, at Praça da Corujeira in Porto, according to an official from the Public Security Police (PSP), speaking to Notícias ao Minuto.
The suspect, aged 39, attempted suicide after the crime and remains in serious condition.
The same source noted that the suspect and the victim knew each other, although the exact nature of their relationship is currently unknown.
It appears the two were involved in a disagreement, for reasons yet to be determined. The man stabbed the woman several times and then ingested “a liquid suspected to be bleach.” He subsequently left the crime scene.
An alert was issued at 8:18 AM. PSP units were dispatched immediately, arriving by 8:27 AM, followed by emergency services. The victim was promptly transported to São João Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:22 AM.
In addition to the PSP, firefighters and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) were present, and the Judicial Police (PJ) took over the investigation due to the nature of the crime.
The victim’s body will now be transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) in Porto for an autopsy.
According to a PSP statement at 9:05 AM, the suspect reportedly jumped from the Pego Negro viaduct near the Rotunda das Areias and was taken to São João Hospital in a serious condition.
Witnesses told SIC Notícias that the woman was stabbed after dropping her child off at a school near Praça da Corujeira.
