The Portuguese Navy coordinated a search and rescue operation on Tuesday afternoon, August 13, for a 71-year-old woman who was aboard the MSC Virtuosa cruise ship.
The cruise ship was sailing 200 nautical miles (equivalent to 371 kilometers) southwest of Lisbon.
According to a statement from the Portuguese Navy, the request for assistance was made by the ship, which reported that the passenger was showing signs of a Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), commonly known as a stroke.
In coordination with the Portuguese Air Force, which deployed an EH-101 helicopter from Squadron 751 for the operation, the rescue was carried out. “The helicopter landed around 4:00 PM at Figo Maduro Airport, and the passenger was transported to a hospital,” the statement concluded.
