The Public Security Police (PSP) apprehended two women, aged 27 and 52, on May 9 in the Avenidas Novas parish of Lisbon, on suspicion of committing theft at a commercial establishment.

In a statement released Saturday, the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP disclosed that a security officer had approached an on-duty police officer. The officer was informed that the security guard had intercepted two women shortly before, allegedly for shoplifting within the premises, after passing through the checkout lines.

“The security officer observed each of the suspects place a pair of sneakers inside their jackets, crossing the checkout lines without making the necessary payment,” the statement reads.

When questioned about the incident, the women “readily admitted to having stolen the items, voluntarily handing over the stolen goods concealed within their jackets.”

The PSP noted that each pair of sneakers was valued at 225 euros, totaling 450 euros.

“The suspects were taken to the police subunit where they underwent a security search, during which a pair of pliers was also discovered,” the statement further informs.

The detainees have been officially named defendants and have provided statements of identity and residence. They have been notified to appear at the Criminal Local Instance of Lisbon – Small Crime Section, for a court hearing.
