
A 59-year-old man sustained serious injuries on Saturday after being hit by a truck that apparently became unsecured during ditch paving work in Mondim de Basto.
The Mondim de Basto Volunteer Firefighters reported an “accident involving an unsecured open-bed truck hitting a 59-year-old male victim.”
The incident occurred in Pedreira, in the Vilar de Ferreiros parish, during ditch paving work when the vehicle seemingly became loose, crushing the victim against a wall.
Following an assessment by the Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) doctor from Vila Real, the victim was deemed in serious condition and was airlifted to Vila Real Hospital.
The corporation received the alert at 13:26 from the Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command.
Present at the scene were 13 members of the Mondim de Basto Volunteer Firefighters supported by five vehicles, the National Republican Guard (GNR), the VMER of Vila Real, a helicopter from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), and the Municipal Civil Protection Service.
