Workers affected by collective dismissals rise by 30% by July

The latest data from the Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations (DGERT) reveals that out of the 4,688 workers affected by collective dismissals, 4,578 were actually dismissed.

The number of workers affected by collective dismissals has been increasing since 2022, with over double the number recorded in the same period of 2023 (2,140 workers) already noted in the first seven months of this year.

Furthermore, the number of collective dismissals reported by companies to the Ministry of Labour rose by 13.3% up to July, compared to the same period in 2024, reaching a total of 332.

According to DGERT’s analysis, the number of reported collective dismissals has been rising since 2023, and the figure recorded in these first seven months is the highest since 2020, when it reached 420 companies.

Of these 332 reported collective dismissals, the majority pertains to small and micro-enterprises, accounting for 38.6% and 36.1% of the total, respectively, based on Lusa’s calculations using DGERT data.

By region, Lisbon and the Tagus Valley and the North continue to report the highest number of collective dismissals up to July, with 166 and 100 respectively.

Specifically in July, 781 workers were effectively dismissed, a number higher than the 465 recorded in the same period last year, as well as the 779 recorded in June.

Out of the 781 workers effectively dismissed in July, the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region accounted for a large portion (81%), with 633 workers dismissed.

The manufacturing industries and consultancy, scientific, technical, and similar activities registered the highest number of dismissed workers in July, with the main reason cited generally being a reduction in staff (53%).
