“The refinery is indeed the largest CO2 emitter into the atmosphere, in line with being the largest industrial facility in the country and also the most important due to a significant part of the nation’s energy sovereignty residing there,” stated the CCT in a communiqué, accusing Zero of persisting “in its pattern of lack of seriousness and irresponsibility in addressing a very serious issue for the country.”
An analysis by the environmental association, released on August 14, noted that emissions from Portugal’s ten largest polluters decreased by 11% from 2023 to 2024, with the Galp refinery leading the Top 10 polluters.
Zero pointed out that Galp not only continues to hold the top position on the list but also increased its emissions by 11%.
“The closure of the Porto Refinery increased overall CO2 emissions into the atmosphere but left the environmentalists at Zero elated, as it removed another target from their list,” argued the CCT.
