Workers in ‘lay-off’ register a year-on-year drop of 48% in March

A report released by the Strategy and Planning Office (GEP) of the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security highlighted a notable decrease in the total number of ‘lay-off’ situations with compensatory payments, following the stipulations in the Labor Code. In March, a reduction of 5,154 processed claims was observed compared to the same month in 2024, marking a decrease of 47.9%.

In a month-over-month comparison with February, there was a slight increase of 50 ‘lay-off’ provisions, equating to a 0.9% rise.

This minor increase comes after a recorded decline in February, the first decrease since October 2024, which was when this indicator began to rise again.

The temporary suspension scheme saw an annual reduction of 53.9% (2,478 fewer processes), totaling 2,118 in March. In monthly terms, there were 319 more processes, representing a 17.7% increase.

Furthermore, in March, ‘lay-off’ provisions were processed for 355 employers, a decrease of 278 compared to the same period last year and an increase of 23 compared to February.
