30 young people from Macau’s Portuguese-speaking Catholic community are in the capital to take part in WYD. Jorge Álvares Foundation “dresses” the group.

A group of 30 young people from Macau’s Portuguese-speaking Catholic community, accompanied by Father Daniel Ribeiro of Macau Cathedral, traveled to Lisbon to participate in World Youth Day (WYD).

After learning of the group’s coming to the Day, and establishing contacts with Father Daniel Ribeiro to help sponsor the trip, the Jorge Álvares Foundation received a request for “financial support for the personalized jackets with the inscription “WYD Lisbon 2023 – Diocese of Macau” that the young people will wear during the event”, said Maria Celeste Hagatong, president of the Jorge Álvares Foundation, during a visit by a Macanese delegation to the institution created in 1999 with the aim of promoting cooperation between Portugal and the then Special Autonomous Region of Macau (SAR).

The Foundation thus associates itself with World Youth Day, contributing to the participation of this group of young people from Macau in the “meeting between young Catholics from all over the world with His Holiness Pope Francis, to celebrate the Faith, participate in religious and cultural activities and share common experiences and values, which they will never forget in their lives”, the institution points out in a statement.

WYD in numbers. One million hosts, 20 kilometers a day on foot, zero candles
