Do you know if you are eligible for Family Allowance? The Social Security Institute (ISS) has announced a simulator available on the Social Security Portal that can answer this question and even reveal the potential allowance amount.
“The new Family Allowance simulator, available on the Social Security Portal, allows users to estimate the amount they may be entitled to,” stated the ISS in a post shared on Instagram.
The ISS indicates that the following benefits are included in this calculation:
- Family Allowance for Children and Young People
- Family Allowance Supplement for Children and Young People with Disabilities
- Childhood Guarantee.
You can access the simulator here.
What is Family Allowance?
It is “a monthly cash benefit to assist families with the expenses associated with the upbringing and education of children and young people,” as described on the Social Security website.
According to the public entity, a child or young person is entitled to the allowance if all the following conditions are met:
- Belongs to a family unit that, at the time of the application, does not have movable assets (bank deposits, shares, bonds, savings certificates, participation titles, and investment fund units) exceeding 240 times the amount of the Social Support Index (IAS);
- Lives in Portugal or is considered a resident;
- Does not work, unless over 16 years and working during school holidays with a work contract;
- Must provide proof of school attendance in July if aged between 16 and 24 years.
What is the duration and amount to receive?
According to Social Security, “the amount and duration vary, depending on the child’s or young person’s age, family composition, and income.”
Additionally, “if the family income of the child or young person falls within the 1st income bracket, they may be entitled to receive the Childhood Guarantee.”
It is noteworthy that family allowance amounts will increase next year, aligning with inflation rates, as outlined in the proposed State Budget for 2026 (OE2026), which includes an increased allocation for this support.

The update planned in OE2026 will be uniform for all income brackets and dependent ages, ensuring all families benefit from the same proportional increase.

“Regarding family allowance, the increase of 27.6 million euros in 2026, compared to 2025, results from the adjustment of amounts in line with the inflation rate, uniform across all family income brackets and the age of the dependent/entitled person,” the OE2026 proposal report released by the government states.
This means the update will be uniform across all income brackets and dependent ages, ensuring all families benefit from the same proportional increase.
In addition to family allowance, other social benefits will also increase next year, although some will be excluded.
