Banco de Portugal will put the 5-euro cupronickel alloy collector’s coin into circulation.
There will also be 30 thousand coins with normal finish
As of June 1, collector coins worth five euros will enter into circulation, the Bank of Portugal (BdP) has announced. The coin will have “discharging power”, i.e. it may be used in payments, but only in Portugal.
The Miragaia longicollum collector coin has a cupronickel alloy and is part of the “Dinosaurs of Portugal” series. On the obverse side of the coin, or the main face, the coin has the image of the dinosaur fossil in a spiral, while in the center is the face value and the national coat of arms. On the left-hand edge, the legends “Portugal” and “2023” are legible.
On the reverse of the coin, in turn, the central field includes the dinosaur in a frontal position with its head and tail turned to its right side, while in the lower area, in silhouette, is a representation of the ground and a grove of trees. On the left edge is also possible to see the indication of the author and the legend “Mint” and, on the right edge, the scientific name of the species, Miragaia longicollum.
The new coin will be distributed to the public through credit institutions, Banco de Portugal cash offices and Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda (the Portuguese Mint) stores.
The BdP also indicates that 30 thousand coins with normal finish will be issued.
