Young man detained after attempting to pay with a counterfeit 50-euro note

The Portalegre District Command of the PSP announced on their Facebook page that a man was arrested on Wednesday by officers from the Criminal Investigation Squad of Portalegre’s Police Division.

The PSP was alerted by a store manager who suspected the man had attempted to pay with a potentially counterfeit 50 euro note, according to the statement.

“PSP quickly mobilized their resources and, using the suspect’s physical description and clothing details, intercepted him on one of the city’s streets,” the police reported.

Faced with the situation, the PSP added, the suspect “produced several notes from one of his pockets, among which was a 50 euro note lacking several security features, confirming it as counterfeit,” which led to his arrest.

“Through police procedures, 13 counterfeit 50 euro notes were seized, totaling 650 euros, some of which had the same serial number,” the PSP explained.

The suspect, as per the police, was brought before a judicial inquiry on the day of arrest, with the case proceeding to investigation.

The PSP “advises merchants to check the quality of banknotes in cash transactions, especially those of higher denominations, and recommends having mechanisms to verify their authenticity.”
