An official from the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) informed the Lusa agency that the man was brought before the judicial authorities today at the Department of Investigation and Penal Action (DIAP) facilities in Évora for an initial hearing and to be formally accused.
The criminal instruction judge decided to release him but imposed several precautionary measures, including a prohibition on contacting the victim, a requirement for daily check-ins at the local police station of his residence area, and the surrender of his passport.
Another police source contacted by Lusa stated that the young foreigner “resides in Évora,” thus he will have to present himself daily “at the PSP station in the city.”
In a statement, the PJ announced today that on Friday, at the Lisbon airport, they arrested this foreign man, suspected of raping a 14-year-old girl in Évora.
The investigation, led by the Évora Local Criminal Investigation Unit (ULIC), began with a report from the victim’s mother to the local PSP, which immediately activated the Judiciária.
According to the same criminal investigation police, “the events took place during a night outing of a group of teenagers,” which included the victim and to which the suspect joined last Saturday.
“In the early hours, the suspect lured the victim to his residence, where he subjected her to significant sexual acts without her consent,” the PJ stated.
The man had been missing since the crime, prompting the ULIC to issue a national exit ban alert.
“He was eventually identified and located on the morning of this Friday at the Lisbon airport, when he was preparing to board a flight to a foreign country, in an operation by the PJ in close collaboration with the Border Control Station located there,” the statement read.
The arrest was formalized following the issuance of a non-flagrant arrest warrant by the DIAP of Évora.
