
The National Republican Guard (GNR) announced on Saturday the arrest of a 21-year-old male on June 26 in Viana do Castelo for drug trafficking, possession of a prohibited weapon, and driving without a legal license.
In a statement, the security forces detailed that the arrest occurred during a routine road inspection.
GNR officers approached a vehicle driven by the suspect.
The young man presented a driving license, which upon verification, was found to belong to someone else. Furthermore, investigations revealed that the individual did not possess a legal license to operate the vehicle he was driving.
The situation escalated when the suspect displayed suspicious behavior and visible signs of nervousness. A personal security search and a vehicle search revealed that the suspect was in possession of illicit substances and a prohibited weapon.
The operation resulted in the arrest of the suspect and the seizure of 18 doses of cocaine, 7.6 doses of MDMA, two doses of hashish, three mobile phones, two knives, a baseball bat, and 780 euros in cash.
The detainee was charged, and the case was reported to the Judicial Court of Viana do Castelo.
581 Arrested in the Act
Additionally, a report on GNR’s weekly operational activity from June 19 to 26 was released today. During this period, 581 individuals were detained in the act, including 281 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 101 for driving without a legal license, 28 for drug trafficking, 24 for theft and robbery, 19 for possession of prohibited weapons, and ten for domestic violence.
In total, 204.82 doses of cocaine, 47 doses of heroin, 37 knives or prohibited weapons, 15 firearms, 973 ammunition rounds, 21 vehicles, and 19,523.35 euros in cash were seized.
In terms of traffic control, GNR detected 8,497 infractions. Among these, 1,000 were for speeding. Additionally, there were 992 violations for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, 667 for driving with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, 272 for lack of civil liability insurance, 416 related to tachographs, 297 for lighting and signaling system anomalies, 216 for improper use of a mobile phone while driving, and 236 for the lack or incorrect use of a safety belt and/or child restraint system.
