Young person dies in collision between electric scooter and car on A14

A young man died early Sunday following a collision between the electric scooter he was riding and a car at kilometer 21.9 of the A14, heading from Figueira da Foz to Coimbra, in Montemor-o-Velho.

The alert was issued at 4:17 a.m., according to confirmation from the Associação Humanitária dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Montemor-o-Velho.

The car driver, around 30 years old, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Hospital Distrital da Figueira da Foz.

The deceased was a foreign national, aged between 20 and 30, according to Subchief Nobre as reported to Diário de Coimbra. He mentioned to the same outlet that the man was not wearing a helmet and was on a vehicle without a license plate, which was propelled approximately 50 meters. Debris from the collision was noticeable up to 250 meters, according to the journal.

The car driver told the emergency services that he only became aware of the young man’s presence upon impact, as the stretch of highway was not illuminated. The car skidded and overturned on the right lane, which was closed during the road cleanup operations.

In addition to the firefighters, a brigade from the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) of Mealhada was present at the scene.

It is important to note that mopeds, including electric scooters, are prohibited from operating on highways under Article 107 of the Road Code, Law No. 72/2013. This is because these vehicles have a maximum speed of 45 km/h and an engine capacity not exceeding 50 cm3.
