Young person loses mobile phone at a festival in Lisbon and reports a fake theft

A young man, aged 24, has been identified by the Public Security Police (PSP) in Lisbon for falsely reporting a robbery.

The Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP announced that the individual approached the PSP service station during a music festival at Bela Vista Park to report that he was a “victim of a robbery.”

Later, on July 9, he went to a PSP station to provide additional information about the “stolen” mobile phone.

The PSP noted that due to the supposed victim’s narrative and the experience of the officer taking the statement, several incongruities suggested the scenario was fabricated.

The young man eventually admitted his account was false, as he had actually lost the phone during the festival.

His intention was to file a robbery report to claim his phone insurance.

He has been made an official suspect and subject to identity and residency verification, as stated by the PSP.

The police emphasized the seriousness of falsely reporting crimes, stating that such acts contribute to a misleading crime statistic and foster a sense of insecurity among the public.

The PSP affirmed its commitment to scrutinize false crime reports, emphasizing the harm they cause to societal security and pledging to bring perpetrators to justice to deter such practices.
