A 20-year-old Brazilian, who suffered a severe traffic accident in the district of Leiria last December, has been released from the hospital and decided to return to Brazil this week.
The accident occurred on December 28 of last year, and the young man’s uncle, who was driving the car, perished. On Sunday, Gustavo Silva Souza returned to Santa Fé do Sul, Brazil.
The young man, who sustained serious injuries, was hospitalized in Coimbra and was only discharged about a month after the accident, on January 27, following multiple surgeries.
“They had to revive me at the scene of the accident. I only remember the crash, then waking up in the ambulance and asking about my uncle. Now, the plan is to stay with my family and sort things out here,” Gustavo recounted, who managed to recover without sequelae, in statements to the Brazilian site.
Gustavo and his uncle, Éder Souza, had traveled to Portugal in February of last year seeking new opportunities. However, the tragedy forced a change in their plans, and the young man decided to return to Brazil. In the future, he does not rule out moving to another country in search of better working conditions.
Éder Souza was buried in Santa Fé on January 11, after the family secured a loan to repatriate his body to Brazil. Concurrently, a fundraising effort was organized, which raised 27,100 reais, approximately 4,405.94 euros. Half of the funds were used to transport Éder’s body, while the rest covered Gustavo’s travel expenses back to Brazil.
