A 24-year-old soldier died on Saturday at the Military Emergency Support Regiment in Abrantes, Santarém district. The Ministry of Defense has expressed its “deepest condolences” to the family and the Army, and an investigation has been launched to “determine the causes and circumstances of the incident.”
“It is with pain and immense consternation that the Portuguese Army announces the death of a soldier, which occurred early this morning at the Military Emergency Support Regiment in Abrantes”, read a statement sent yesterday to Agência Lusa, noting that the Military Judicial Police has been notified.
“The deceased soldier was 24 years old and was from Tabuaço, Viseu,” it adds.
The death occurred early Saturday morning, and the Army confirms that “immediate first aid was provided on-site, and INEM was activated,” with psychological support offered to the family and the remaining service members.
“The Portuguese Army deeply mourns this irreplaceable loss and extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, expressing solidarity with all those who shared life and service with the soldier,” the statement concludes.
The Ministry of National Defense responded at the beginning of the evening, expressing sorrow over the death of the 24-year-old soldier and extending “deepest condolences” to the family and the Army.

The ministry, overseen by centrist Nuno Melo, “deeply mourns the death of a soldier from the Military Emergency Support Regiment” located in Abrantes, according to a note of regret published on the social network X.
“The Ministry of National Defense extends its deepest condolences to the family and the Portuguese Army”, concluded the same note.
The Army today initiated an internal process to investigate the “causes and circumstances” of the death of a 24-year-old soldier at the Military Emergency Support Regiment in Abrantes, Santarém district.
