Young woman violently assaulted and dragged in the street for wanting to end relationship

A young woman was subjected to “violent assaults” and dragged through the streets for attempting to end a dating relationship with the suspect, a 25-year-old man, in the parish of São Domingos de Benfica, Lisbon, last week.

The Public Security Police (PSP) announced, in a statement released to the press on Friday, that they arrested a man “suspected of committing domestic violence” on September 18, following a report that “an individual was dragging a young woman in the public street.”

Officers responded “quickly” to the scene, where they spoke with “the victim and witnesses who had observed the attacks carried out by the suspect.”

“According to their findings, the victim intended to end her relationship with the suspect, which motivated the violent assaults, including immobilization of the victim by neck restraint (so-called ‘chokehold’), several punches to the head, face, and back, bites on the face, and dragging the victim through a wooded area,” stated the PSP.

The authority reported that the assaults only ceased due to the “physical intervention of witnesses,” and the suspect fled in the victim’s vehicle.

The young woman suffered “several injuries” of “some severity,” prompting on-site assistance and transportation to a hospital.

Soon after, the PSP located the suspect at his residence. He was willing to talk to the officers and admitted to the crime, leading to his arrest “given the entire context of the occurrence, including the observed facts and eyewitnesses.”

The detained individual was placed in the Metropolitan Command of Lisbon’s detention facilities and was brought before the competent judicial authority, where he was remanded in custody.
