‘Zero Rate Behind the Wheel’ campaign on the road starting Tuesday

A campaign, ongoing until the 10th, involves the Autoridade Nacional de Segurança Rodoviária (ANSR), the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR), and the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP). These authorities are conducting inspections, particularly on roads and access points with high traffic flow, aiming to reduce accidents and promote safe driving behaviors.

Simultaneously, ANSR is carrying out awareness actions in Andrães, Vila Real district (Tuesday); Chaves (Wednesday); Pombal (Thursday); Alcobaça, Leiria district (Friday); and Tunes, Silves municipality, Faro district (on the 10th).

In a statement released today, authorities remind that in Portugal, in 2023, one in four drivers who died in traffic accidents had a blood alcohol level of 0.5 g/l or higher, and three in four reached levels of 1.2 g/l or above, categorizing it as a crime.

Of all the traffic accident victims autopsied, 23% had a blood alcohol level above the legally permitted limit, with 73% surpassing the criminal threshold.

The ANSR, GNR, and PSP emphasize that driving under the influence of alcohol poses a risk to everyone. They highlight that with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 g/l, the risk of suffering a severe or fatal accident doubles.

The statement explains that alcohol reduces the visual field, causing “tunnel vision,” and this loss of faculties, along with behavioral changes that may lead to euphoria and disinhibition, increases the likelihood of involvement in road accidents.
