Accident in Namibia that killed two Portuguese injured 16 other nationals

The accident in Namibia on Wednesday involving buses carrying tourists, which left two Portuguese women dead, caused injuries to 16 other nationals, six of whom require some caution, according to the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities.

In an update given to the Lusa news agency earlier this morning, José Cesário said that, in addition to the two dead, “there were 16 people with various types of injuries, six of whom require some care, but are not life-threatening”.

Four Portuguese have already been discharged and “there are still 10 cases with minor injuries, which we hope will be discharged quickly,” he added.

José Cesário also said that “there will be a third person who died, but they are not Portuguese”.

The Secretary of State had previously told Lusa that people of various nationalities were involved in the accident and that the group of Portuguese tourists, from the north of the country, were traveling through a travel agency.

On Wednesday, the Portuguese community councillor in the capital Windhoek confirmed that the accident occurred after 15:00 (14:00 in Lisbon), in the Kuiseb Valley, on the way to the largest sand dunes of Sossus Vley in the Namibian desert.

The accident involved two buses carrying 40 tourists, at least 22 of whom were Portuguese, said Manuel Coelho.

Of the 22 Portuguese involved, two died at the scene.
