Carneiro submits candidacy for PS leadership: “Significant moment”

The candidate for the position of Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), José Luís Carneiro, submitted his candidacy at the party’s national headquarters on Thursday. He highlighted this as “a particularly significant moment” as it coincides with the 40th anniversary of Portugal’s application for membership in the European Communities.

“A year earlier, José Medeiros Ferreira signed the Charter of Fundamental Rights with the Council of Europe, which was crucial in inspiring our Constitution of the Portuguese Republic. Mário Soares, when taking this step, emphasized that it was not an economic decision but fundamentally a commitment to European values, namely a choice for pluralistic democracy, market economy, and an open, understanding, tolerant, and humanistic society,” he stated.

José Luís Carneiro emphasized that his commitment to the PS is, “firstly, a commitment to this history of achievement and consolidation of freedoms, rights, guarantees, peace, solidarity, and well-being in the national community, which was also formed from the European project.”

“This signifies not only a proposal to address the daily needs of our fellow citizens but also and fundamentally a vision for the future of our country, which we consider a vision connected with a pact for the future of our country, aligned with the major orientations of the United Nations and the European Union,” he said.

It should be noted that the internal elections of the Socialist Party are scheduled for June 27 and 28. José Luís Carneiro is currently the only candidate for the position of Secretary-General following the resignation of Pedro Nuno Santos.
