César calls for pedagogical and political firmness against “totalitarian tendencies”

Carlos César spoke to journalists following the June 10th ceremony, celebrating Portugal Day, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities, held in Lagos, Faro district.

Referring to the speech by this year’s commissioner for the celebrations, writer and State Councilor Lídia Jorge, who warned against inhumanity and racism among other issues, the PS president stated it is “important to have pedagogical and political firmness to not pave the way for totalitarian tendencies – tendencies that unfortunately proliferate in the country.”

“I believe we cannot be inattentive to these phenomena, which are attempts at totalitarianism. And this attention is not only for politicians but also for the Portuguese,” he emphasized.

When questioned about the possibility of ongoing “revisionism of extremes,” a point raised by Lídia Jorge in her speech, Carlos César argued that “the Portuguese should not confuse the need to solve unresolved problems with dictatorial and totalitarian drifts that solve nothing.”

“Totalitarian drifts, on the contrary, deepen the anguish and the state’s ineptitude in its relationship with citizens,” asserted the PS president.

Conversely, according to Carlos César, the solution lies in governing “well, solving problems and demonstrating that democracy is the proper setting for this resolution to be achieved effectively.”

“There is no alternative regime to democracy that respects people and that can be the proper seat for resolving people’s problems,” he added.
