The National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) issued an opinion focusing only on the new 117 cameras, not on the system as a whole. The commission provides several recommendations for the new system, including:

1. The equipment should have alert mechanisms for unauthorized access attempts or tampering, as well as protection against vandalism.

2. User database storage should comply with regulations, using the National Internal Security Network (RNSI) for authentication instead of directly on the video server.

3. Audit logs should not contain personal data, but operation records should be kept for two years.

4. Methods to identify and detect system anomalies and misuse should be defined.

The CNPD acknowledges that some issues raised in its first opinion have been addressed, such as the use of digital masks and preventing the capture of images inside homes or buildings.

The Secretary of State for Internal Administration, Telmo Correia, expressed hope for a swift approval of the new opinion, stating that the police have rectified the problems identified in the first assessment.

The new 117 cameras will be installed in areas such as Asprela, Campanhã, Estádio do Dragão, Pasteleira, and Diogo Botelho.

The existing video surveillance system, which began operating on June 22, 2023, has already preserved images related to 910 criminal cases, with the majority (592) occurring this year.
