Train at railway station

The strikes affecting the service of CP – Comboios de Portugal led to the suppression of 138 of the 725 trains that were scheduled for the period between 00:00 and 19:00 today, informed the carrier.

According to CP, 587 trains circulated during this period, which represents a suppression of 19% in relation to those that were scheduled.

In long-distance traffic, ten of the 54 scheduled trains did not run, while in regional traffic, 72 of the 228 scheduled trains were canceled.

In Lisbon’s urban area, 39 out of an estimated 271 trains did not run, and in Oporto, 13 out of 147 scheduled trains did not run.

In the urban area of Coimbra, four out of 25 scheduled trains were canceled.

After several days, the strike at CP and Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) is now in its eighth hour.

In addition, until the end of the month, “in CP, workers whose normal working hours exceed more than three hours between 00:00 and 05:00, will go on strike from the seventh hour of service” and, between April 10 and 30, in IP, “workers whose normal working hours are more than three hours between 00:00 and 05:00 will go on strike from the seventh hour of service.

These strikes were declared by a platform of unions composed of ASCEF – Associação Sindical das Chefias Intermedias de Exploração Ferroviária; SINFB – Sindicato Nacional dos Ferroviários Braçais e Afins; SINFA – Sindicato Independente dos Trabalhadores Ferroviários, das Infraestruturas e Afins; FENTECOP – National Trade Union of Transport, Communications and Public Works; SIOFA – Independent Trade Union of Railway and Allied Workers; ASSIFECO – Independent Trade Union of Commercial Railway Carriers and STF – Technical Railway Services.

The National Union of Train Drivers of Portuguese Railways (SMAQ) has also announced a new strike at CP for the entire month of April, due to the “disrespectful attitude” of the company.

Among the workers’ demands are “effective wage increases”, the “valorization of the traction profession” and the improvement of working conditions in the cabs and social facilities, as well as safety conditions on the lines and in the engine rooms.

They also demand “humanization of work schedules, fixed meal times and reduction of rest periods away from headquarters”, “an effective protocol for psychological support of drivers in case of collisions with people on the track and accidents” and “recognition and valorization of the professional and training requirements of drivers within the new legislative framework”.
