The display of the automobile insurance number on the car windscreen will no longer be mandatory as of Tuesday, according to a law published today in the Diário da República, which also eliminates the associated fines.

“The present law eliminates the obligation to display the automobile insurance sticker and proceeds with the second amendment to Decree Law 291/2007, of August 21, which establishes the system of compulsory automobile civil liability insurance, as amended by Decree Law 153/2008, of August 6,” states Law 32/2023, published today.

The text of the diploma adds that the documents provided for in this article may be issued and made available “through electronic means, without prejudice to their issue and availability on paper, at no additional cost, at the request of the policyholder.

Approved by parliament on June 2, the law “comes into force the day after its publication,” that is, on Tuesday.

The proposal, which resulted from a bill presented by the Liberal Initiative, was approved with the favorable vote of the PS, PCP, and BE, as well as the proponent, the abstention of the PSD, and the vote against by Chega.

In the explanatory statement of this initiative, IL pointed out: “In a historical context of severe financial constraints, we do not see it as proportional or justified for the State to charge hundreds of euros just for forgetting a simple piece of paper that only transmits information that is already in the possession of the person who is being fined”, justifying the repeal of the articles of legislation that currently oblige drivers to display the insurance number, as well as the respective fines.
