Eight flights canceled at Madeira airport due to bad weather

Eight flights to and from Madeira airport were canceled today due to the bad weather that is affecting the island and led to the issuance of a red notice because of the forecast of heavy rain.

According to information available at 07:30 on the ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal (Portuguese Airports) website, five flights were cancelled in departures: Azores Airlines (one), TAP (one), Swiss International (one) and Ryanair (two); and three in arrivals: Ryanair (two) and Swiss International.

ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal (Portuguese Airports) indicated on Monday that the Madeira airport has activated its contingency plan due to bad weather in the region.

On Monday 28 flights were canceled and another 12 diverged.

According to a note released by ANA, the adverse conditions, especially heavy rain, should continue today, and teams have been strengthened in the terminal to support affected passengers.

The company also says that the restaurant units will work outside normal hours, as will the service counters of the airlines and different companies.

Also according to ANA, the InMadeira platform was activated to try to guarantee accommodation and the company is also working with several partners to guarantee nursing assistance.

In the note, the company indicates that “the meteorological forecast from the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) points to an increase in storm intensity during the day today.

Due to this situation, he appealed to passengers to try to confirm their trips before going to the airport to avoid unnecessary crowds.

The south coast and mountainous regions of Madeira Island are under red warning due to the forecast of heavy and persistent rain because of the passage of the Óscar depression.

The red warning, the most severe on a scale of three, was issued by IPMA and is in effect until 3:00 pm today.
