Francisco Figueira is the spokesperson for the parliamentary leaders’ conference.

Last Tuesday, during the first plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic of the new Legislature, Francisco Figueira was proposed by the PSD Parliamentary Group for the position of first secretary at the Assembly’s table. In the initial vote, he secured the absolute majority of votes (116 out of 230) necessary for his election.

He will replace Jorge Paulo Oliveira, a social democrat who was not elected as a deputy in the elections on May 18, as the spokesperson for the leaders’ conference.

In the previous Legislature, Francisco Figueira served as the chief of staff to the president of the PSD Parliamentary Group, Hugo Soares, a role that now belongs to Jorge Paulo Oliveira.

Francisco Figueira, aged 44, is a lawyer by profession, leads the PSD’s Évora District and was the only deputy elected by the AD in this electoral district. The other two deputies were elected by PS and Chega.

At the AD rally in Évora during the last electoral campaign, Francisco Figueira remarked that his district received “a heavy legacy” from previous socialist executives but noted that the current Government supported Alto Alentejo “every day.”

“There were those who didn’t like that. And today we are here because there was a negative coalition between PS and Chega that decided to overthrow the AD Government in the Assembly of the Republic,” he stated in his speech.

Francisco Figueira further argued that in Alto Alentejo, there are currently projects underway in the health, irrigation, and cultural sectors, with support for the young and the elderly, and the reevaluation of 19 public administration career paths.
