The independent technical commission examining the expansion of Lisbon’s airport capacity has announced the final list of potential locations, with a solution expected by the end of the year.
At the first conference of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI) on the results of the activities developed in the first phase of the Strategic Environmental Assessment for the expansion of airport capacity in the Lisbon region, the final list will be presented.
CTI, located at the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC) in Lisbon and established at the end of last year, is led by Professor Rosário Partidário and a team of six technical coordinators.
In a late-January interview with Pp, university professor Rosário Macário, the technical coordinator of CTI and an expert in Transport Systems Planning and Operation, who was responsible for coordinating the airport planning area, stated that Beja and Alverca had been added to the list of potential locations and that the commission was still accepting additional proposals.
These two locations are in addition to the five proposals outlined in a resolution approved by the Council of Ministers last year, which outlined the formation of a CTI to analyze five hypotheses for the Lisbon airport solution (Portela + Montijo; Montijo + Portela; Alcochete; Portela + Santarém; Santarém), but allowed for the addition of additional options.
In recent days, the Monte Real (Leiria) and Alcochete + Portela hypotheses have also been reported.
The reports containing the STI’s conclusions must be finalized by November, after which the public discussion phase will commence.
