“It is for Portugal that we are here,” began António José Seguro during the presentation of his candidacy for President of the Republic at the Cultural and Congress Center of Caldas da Rainha.
The socialist continued with a “word of eternal affection” for those who helped him shape himself “as a man and as a citizen” and who instilled in him “non-negotiable values,” such as “freedom, equality, solidarity, respect for others, and seriousness.”
“These are values that have strengthened my journey, without deviation or regret. These are also the values at the origin of the path we are now starting: freedom, equality, solidarity, respect for others, and seriousness,” he continued.
According to Seguro, “these are the cardinal points of a journey with a goal: to make Portugal a just and excellent country.”
The former socialist leader announced his entry into the race for Belém on June 3, the day the new parliament commenced, through a video by TVI/CNN Portugal.
Two days after confirming his candidacy, in his last commentary on CNN, António José Seguro remarked that the PS has “all the time in the world to decide” on the presidential elections, noting that he has significant support both inside and outside the party.
In addition to António José Seguro, former PSD leader Luís Marques Mendes, former Chief of the Naval Staff Henrique Gouveia e Melo, and Joana Amaral Dias have also announced their candidacies for the presidential elections scheduled for January next year.
So far, Seguro has been the only personality from the socialist arena to have announced a candidacy for head of state.
