Carlos Alexandre, a judge at the Central Criminal Investigation Tribunal (TCIC) since 2004, was appointed today to the Lisbon Court of Appeal, announced the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSM).

The CSM today published on its website the allocation of judges to the Guimarães, Porto, Coimbra, Lisboa and Évora Courts of Appeal for the year 2023.

Carlos Alexandre, 62, has been assigned to a criminal section of the Lisbon Court of Appeal, and could take up the post in September.

The investigating judge is one of five candidates for the position of Portuguese European Public Prosecutor within the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, an independent body with the power to investigate, prosecute and bring charges and back them up with evidence and in court against perpetrators of criminal offenses affecting the Union’s financial interests (e.g. fraud, corruption or cross-border VAT fraud in excess of €10 million).

Since 2004, Carlos Alexandre has been a judge at the Tribunal Central d’Instruction Criminelle, where major economic-financial crime cases such as the BES affair are dealt with.
