A man was assaulted on Saturday by a member of a neo-Nazi group on a street in the historic center of Guimarães. The Public Security Police (PSP) recorded the incident and reported the facts to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP).
The attacker is identified as João P., leader of a local neo-Nazi cell, and is accused of “brutally assaulting” Ricardo R., according to an anti-fascist association. The association also revealed that João P. visited the victim’s home “several times” to place extremist stickers on the doors as a form of intimidation.
The suspect, allegedly involved in assaults on anti-fascist demonstrators in Lisbon on April 25, is also said to have made videos promoting hate and discrimination against people of different origins and religions.
The police confirmed receiving an alert about the assault, stating that “upon arrival, the victim was already being assisted by the Guimarães Volunteer Firefighters, who then transported him to the Alto Ave Local Health Unit.”
The 31-year-old victim reported to officers that he was assaulted in the head “without apparent reason” and went to the Guimarães police station to file a formal complaint at 00h00 on Sunday.
The PSP “recorded the incident” and will communicate the facts to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
