Porto City Council pays €44,000 to Sé market vendors

The Porto City Council will pay a total of €44,000 to the five traders who resist in the São Sebastião Market, in Sé, which will be closed defiantly.

The closure of the equipment, quite degraded, was scheduled for the end of June, but the proposal for the definitive closure, the extinction of the licenses of the sellers and the payment of the respective indemnities will only go to the Executive meeting this Monday.

The proposal states that the market is not hygienic, safe and healthy. And that the five vendors have accepted compensation, to the detriment of a possible transfer to another market.

In total, the compensation amounts to €44,000. Three sellers (fish, flowers, fruit and vegetables) will receive €10,000 each. The other two (both fish) will be entitled to €6,000 and €8,000.

In the documents accompanying the proposals, it is specified that the average monthly income of traders ranged from €660 to €1,500.

The requalification of the São Sebastião market was planned under an inter-administrative contract between the City Council and the Union of Parishes of the Historic Center. The project did not materialize and the Municipality resumed the management of the space.

Currently, the market “does not meet the minimum conditions for its occupation and use, since it generally represents a risk to public health and safety”.
