The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the GNR and the PSP are launching the “Zero Rate at the Wheel” road safety campaign on Thursday, which aims to alert people to the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The “Zero Rate at the Wheel” campaign, which runs until next Wednesday, includes awareness-raising actions by the ANSR and enforcement operations by the GNR and PSP, the authorities said in a joint statement.

The awareness-raising actions are taking place in conjunction with the enforcement operations scheduled for Avenida de Ceuta (Lisbon), IC20 – Km7 – in the Almada/Costa Caparica direction (Setúbal) Avenida Saraiva Carvalho, Figueira da Foz, A4 – Praça das Portagens de Amarante, Porto-Amarante direction and at the Rotunda da Cadeia, Faro.

In the note, ANSR, GNR and PSP point out that with a blood alcohol level of 0.5 grams per liter, the risk of suffering a serious or fatal accident doubles.

According to these organizations, driving under the influence of alcohol causes various cognitive and information processing disorders, as well as changes in the ability to react to unforeseen events and motor incoordination.

“Alcohol also reduces the visual field, causing so-called tunnel vision. This loss of capacity, as well as changes in behavior that can lead to states of euphoria and disinhibition, significantly increase the risk of being involved in road accidents,” say the ANSR, GNR and PSP.
