Two of the injured from the fire that was subdued at dawn today in Alcabideche, Cascais, were discharged and six remain in hospital units, Civil Protection announced, adding that the animals removed from kennels have already “returned to their places of origin”.

In a situation report to the media at the command post, at 11:00, the regional commander of Emergency and Civil Protection of Lisbon and Tagus Valley, Elísio Oliveira, explained that five injured people are at the Cascais Hospital “under monitoring” and one is at the Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon due to an eye injury.

There are still some displaced persons “under assessment” by the National Institute of Medical Emergency due to their age.

The forest fire broke out near 17:00 on Tuesday, in Zambujeiro, in a mountain area, and, with the force of the wind, the flames moved towards a dense urban network, without reaching, however, burning houses or other buildings.

Even so, as a precaution, residents of areas such as Zambujeiro, Cabreiro and Murches were removed from their homes.

In the evening, Civil Protection had said that nine firefighters suffered minor injuries in fighting the flames, mainly in “exhaustion situations”, while four civilians were assisted “by smoke inhalation”.

According to the Cascais City Council, in the Lisbon district, around 800 animals were removed from the municipal kennel and the São Francisco de Assis Association and transferred to another municipal pavilion.

“The operations are going as planned, with the consolidation of the aftermath throughout the perimeter of the fire”, said Elísio Oliveira, at the 11:00 ‘briefing’.

The commander stressed that there were no active fires, but “some hot spots” that the authorities are paying attention to.

On the ground at that time were 492 operatives, 190 vehicles and two air resources.

“We will keep a reinforced device here for the next few hours, throughout the day, to ensure that there are no surprises,” said Elísio Oliveira, adding that the authorities have taken advantage of the lower temperature and the calm of the wind during the morning to make the greatest possible consolidation of the fight.

According to the representative, the operatives have been surrendered and there are no roads cut.

The fire was reported to be contained by 04:00.
