Madeira Island is the only area in the country currently under an orange warning from the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) for hot weather, with a yellow level warning active for Porto Santo Island in the same region.
The yellow warning, the least severe on a three-level scale, is issued by IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions, while the orange warning (the second level) is issued when there is a moderate to high-risk weather situation.
Today’s forecast includes periods of very cloudy skies, with partly cloudy conditions on the southwest side of Madeira Island. The wind is expected to be light to moderate from the north/northeast, blowing moderate to strong between 30 and 45 kilometers per hour, sometimes with gusts up to 70 kilometers per hour in the highlands, in the eastern and western extremes of Madeira Island, and on Porto Santo Island.
The wind has also been hindering efforts to combat a fire that broke out on Wednesday in the municipality of Ribeira Brava and spread to the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, causing concern among authorities.
