The Liberal Initiative (IL), which managed to elect one MP in Madeira’s most recent legislative elections, has set itself the goal of increasing the number of votes and MPs in the early regional elections, the head of its list, Nuno Morna, said today.
“Our expectation is to grow, we go into every election with a view to growth. We’re going to take part in these elections with this objective, to grow, to consolidate, to make sure that liberalism becomes more and more established in Madeira and that our solutions allow for development, allow for the empowerment of Madeirans,” said the candidate.
Nuno Morna was speaking to journalists outside the Madeira Judicial Court in Funchal, after handing over IL’s candidate list for the early regional legislative elections, which has Gonçalo Maia Camelo as number two, followed by Alícia Teixeira.
Regarding coalitions and post-election agreements, Nuno Morna stressed that since 2019, when IL ran for the first time in Madeira’s regional elections, the party’s position has not changed.
“We are always available to talk to anyone, we are always available to reach agreements with other political forces in order to reduce taxes, reduce [health] waiting lists, empower Madeirans in the way they live, [give] everyone more freedom to live,” he stressed.
“Anything that has to do with our guidelines, the basis of our thinking, we are willing to come to an understanding with anyone. Understanding doesn’t imply agreements or coalitions,” stressed Nuno Morna, who was elected as a member of parliament in the regional elections on September 24 last year.
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, dissolved Madeira’s parliament and called early elections for May 26 following the political crisis caused by the investigation into suspected corruption in the archipelago.
The regional government, a PSD/CDS-PP coalition with the parliamentary support of PAN, has been in administration since the beginning of February. The president of the executive, the Social Democrat Miguel Albuquerque, resigned from his post after he was indicted in the case and PAN withdrew its political confidence in him.
Last year, the PSD/CDS-PP coalition elected 23 MPs, the PS won 11 mandates, the JPP five, Chega four, while CDU, IL, PAN and BE elected one MP each.
The PSD/CDS-PP coalition fell one deputy short of an absolute majority and signed a parliamentary impact agreement with PAN, represented in the regional parliament by single deputy Mónica Freitas.
