The Public Prosecutor’s Office today requested pre-trial detention for the three people arrested as part of the investigation into suspected corruption in Madeira, including the former mayor of Funchal, Pedro Calado.
The announcement was made by lawyer Raul Soares da Veiga, speaking to journalists outside the Central Criminal Investigation Court, in Lisbon’s Campus de Justiça, where the Public Prosecutor’s arguments were held.
In addition to Pedro Calado, the leader of the AFA construction group, Avelino Farinha, and the main shareholder of the Socicorreia construction group, Custódio Correia, have also been detained since January 24.
As part of this process, the president of the government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque (PSD), was made a defendant and ended up resigning, which led to the fall of the regional executive, a PSD/CDS-PP coalition, with the parliamentary support of PAN.
