The Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA) today put the districts of Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Braga on an orange warning, the second most serious on a scale of four, due to snow.
In the latest update, the IPMA indicates that the orange warning for those three districts will be in force between 9pm today and 9am on Monday, stating that snowfall above 800 meters is forecast for that period, with accumulation above 1000 meters, which could reach 15 centimeters.
The IPMA warns of “moderate disruption caused by snowfall with accumulation and possible formation of ice”, including roads being restricted or closed, damage to structures or trees, and local supplies being affected.
The districts of Guarda, Bragança, Castelo Branco and Porto will remain under a yellow warning (the second least serious on a scale of four) due to snow until 3pm on Monday,
In these districts the snowfall will be above 1000 to 1200 meters, with accumulation of up to 25 centimeters above 1600 meters.
The districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Braga and Vila Real are also under an IPMA yellow warning due to precipitation, while Beja, Setúbal and Faro are under a yellow warning because of sea turbulence.
