Around 880 animals removed from association and kennel in Cascais

About 880 animals from the São Francisco de Assis Association and another kennel were removed from the premises due to the fire that has been burning in Cascais since mid-afternoon, councilor Nuno Piteira Lopes told Lusa news agency.

The animals are being transferred to the Zambujeiro soccer field and are safe, said the councilor, responsible for the São Francisco de Assis Association, shortly after 20:30.

About 800 dogs and cats were at the São Francisco de Assis Association and another 80 dogs were at a kennel near the 3rd Circular in Cascais.

According to the councillor at Cascais Câmara, in the district of Lisbon, the flames arrived near the fence of the São Francisco de Assis Association, located in Alcabideche.

The operation to remove the animals was carried out with the support of the population, several associations and the organization IRA – Intervenção e Resgate Animal.

The alert for the fire that broke out in the locality of Zambujeiro, in Alcabideche, in the municipality of Cascais, was given at 16:58, continued at 21:15 with two active fronts and, according to Civil Protection, the operatives on the ground will continue to be reinforced during the night since the air means were withdrawn at dusk.

The same source added that there will also be a reinforcement of track machines.

According to the website of the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, at 21:15, the fire was being fought by 658 operatives, supported by 176 vehicles.

During the afternoon, 14 aircraft were involved in fighting the fire, which is being hampered by the wind.

Authorities have removed several people from homes in Zambujeiro and Cobre as a precaution.

According to the commander of the Sub-Regional Command of Emergency and Civil Protection of Greater Lisbon, the fire had not caused damage to housing until early evening, nor was it putting the Cascais Hospital at risk.

The Sub-Regional Command of Emergency and Civil Protection of Greater Lisbon also indicated that a firefighter suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation.

Regarding the interrupted roads, traffic was cut off on Highway 5 (A5) and some “punctual cuts” were made on the surrounding roads.

GNR source had already indicated to Lusa that the A5 was cut between the Alvide and Cascais nodes, in both directions.
