Besides the Hilton Garden Inn Évora, in which it invested 21 million, the Canadian group has three other hotel projects in the region. The new unit has 130 rooms and creates 95 direct jobs.
Located a few minutes away from the historic center of the city of Évora, the Hilton Garden Inn Évora, which represents an investment of 21 million euros, is the first investment of the Canadian group to open doors in Alentejo. Mercan Properties has three other hotel projects in the region.
With an area of over eight thousand square meters, the Hilton Garden Inn Évora has 130 rooms and an outdoor pool on the terrace, a bar and a terrace. The hotel also has a restaurant, gym and meeting room with a capacity to accommodate up to 50 people.
This new venture by the Canadian group will create 95 direct jobs and also contributed to the creation of 80 jobs during the construction period of the venture, which started in May 2021.
For Jordi Vilanova, president of Mercan Properties, the group’s debut in the Alentejo is “an important investment for the company, which is opening a new hotel in another historical city in Portugal (….). This new hotel unit is a result of the Residence Permits for Investment regime, and therefore demonstrates the potential of this type of regime for the effective creation of wealth, tourist attraction and employment.
In March, Canadians with 27 hotel projects in the country dramatized that the end of gold visas could jeopardize 425 million Mercan’s investment in Portugal, resulting in the loss of 565 new direct jobs. At the time, they also warned that investors could seek compensation in court.
Last month, the Canadian group opened the doors of the Arts Hotel Porto, Tapestry Collection by Hilton in the city of Porto, an investment of 15 million Euros.
The Canadian group arrived in Portugal in 2015 and currently has 27 projects in locations such as Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Lisbon, Amarante, Santiago do Cacém, Évora, Beja and Algarve. In addition to Portugal, the Mercan Group has a presence in China, India, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
In three years, Hilton plans to open nine hotels in Portugal.
